Two blues, one graceful drape. The body of this silk cotton saree is a bright cerulean, lined with fine gold zari stripes and scattered with small gold butas. It flows into a deep royal blue pallu with matching butas, a slim kaddi border in gold and pink, and tassels at the end. The royal blue blouse piece matches the pallu.
This saree is handwoven by weavers in Kanchipuram, the temple town famous for its centuries-old weaving tradition. It’s woven extra wide, about 45 inches, which leaves generous fabric for stitching your blouse comfortably.
Silk cotton gives you the best of both fibres. This saree is woven with an 80-count cotton warp (the lengthwise threads) and a pure mulberry silk weft (the crosswise threads), so it has the soft sheen of silk but feels lighter and more breathable, comfortable for a full day.
Why a handwoven silk cotton costs more: Many “silk cotton” sarees in the market are machine-made with art silk. This one uses real mulberry silk across the entire body, pallu and blouse, and is woven by hand on a traditional loom. A weaver spends several days on a single saree, placing every buta and the zari kaddi border by hand.
How to style it: Wear it with the royal blue blouse and gold temple jewellery for a classic South Indian look, or try a contrast blouse in pink or mustard to pick up the border. Jasmine in the hair completes it.
